China held its first Blue Flag Beach Award Ceremony on 13 July 2026, formalising a milestone that had been building for over a year: Weihai International Bathing Beach, on the coast of Shandong province, is now the first site in mainland China to carry the Blue Flag.
The certification followed the standard international process. The beach began aligning its facilities and management with Blue Flag criteria in 2025, passed domestic verification in February 2026, cleared international review in April, and had its flag formally raised on 22 May 2026 — a sequence that culminated in the national award ceremony reported in July. In China, the programme is coordinated by the Publicity and Education Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the country’s national member and liaison body for the Foundation for Environmental Education.

A new market for an established label
The Blue Flag standard applied is the same one used across the more than 50 countries already in the network, covering four categories and 33 indicators on water quality, environmental management, safety and environmental education. Chinese state media described the distinction as the “Michelin of beaches,” reflecting how the certification is being positioned domestically: less as a regulatory requirement and more as an internationally recognised quality mark aimed at both local bathers and inbound tourism.
The certification fills a gap in China’s access to international beach recognition standards, according to the officials who oversaw Weihai’s application.
Weihai, a coastal city in eastern Shandong facing the Yellow Sea, had already built a reputation domestically for water-quality management before pursuing the Blue Flag. Whether other Chinese beaches follow with their own applications in future seasons will be the next marker of how the programme takes root in the country.
